Who is Bella Kinesis?
Bella Kinesis is a sportswear line helping us look good, feel good and do good when we exercise. For every item you buy from their beautiful range, Bella Kinesis funds 1 month of business education for a woman in rural India through the Mann Deshi Foundation. They call it Strength for Strength: whether it's through helping them feel confident when they work out or providing education, Bella Kinesis is all about women supporting other women to grow stronger together.
It started with a desire to make beautiful sportswear that all women will look and feel great in. Founders Roshni & Shaleena experienced first-hand how empowering and uplifting exercise can be, but they also saw that many sportswear brands cater to a very narrow type of woman, which can leave us feeling disheartened rather than inspired. That’s why they launched Bella Kinesis at the end of 2014.
But they wanted to do more: after both having spent time in India and feeling troubled by the levels of violence against women and obstacles towards obtaining education and business training, they saw that they and their customers could make a difference, and so they put the Strength for Strength initiative at the heart of their brand.
Why is what they do important?
There are two key reasons why Bella Kinesis have won my heart and mind: the ‘Strength for Strength’ campaign, and how they are determined to answer the question, 'who made my clothes'.
The first Strength is for the women who wear their clothes. Exercise is becoming increasingly competitive meaning more and more, work outs are motivated by obligation and guilt. We need more people like Roshni & Shaleena reminding us that we are all beautifully different and that exercise is about feeling good and making our lives healthier and happier.
The second Strength is about supporting women across the world. The vast majority of people who suffer because of the garment industry are women. Often being a garment worker is the only way to support their family, but they compromise their own lives far too much in the process due to poor working standards. Women need access to better opportunities, and Bella Kinesis’s partnership with the Mann Deshi Foundation is working to improve women’s access to education and business training in rural India, so that more women have the power to dictate their own future.
Finally, Bella Kinesis is determined to answer the question 'who made my clothes'. They use UK factories which they investigate themselves to ensure they fulfil codes of conduct and high standards, and have run a campaign, 'who made your clothes', to put faces to the clothing they sell. Bella Kinesis is a role model in taking responsibility and accountability for how a brand’s products are made.
